Mais lorsqu'il en refuse la publication, William entreprend de ruiner la vie de son éditeur, s'en prenant successivement à son chat, sa copine et son auteur vedette.
Kyle est alors obligé de se replonger dans le roman de William, Devil's Hopyard, et découvre que le livre fait sinistrement écho à l'histoire de la disparition non élucidée de sa petite amie à l'université. Et qu'il ressemble cruellement à la confession d'un criminel.
